WNO’s Solidarity for Ongoing Movement of the Sanghiya Gathbandhan in Nepal

Nepal’s much-awaited new Constitution was promulgated in September 2015 but unfortunately has put the country into unprecedented turmoil. The new Constitution neither addresses the aspirations of indigenous nationalities (Janajati) nor fulfills the demands of the Madhesi and Tharu populations of Nepal to recognize their citizenship. From the day this Constitution was enacted, angry Madhesi, Tharu, and Janajati people of Nepal have been agitating against it. Led by Nepal’s major political parties, the Government of Nepal has chosen to suppress the protests, and use of excessive force has caused the death of nearly 60 people.

The Madhesi agitation, one of the longest in Nepal’s history, recently entered a new phase—a Sanghiya Gathbandhan Alliance formed between the indigenous populations (Janajati) and working together to stage more protests in Kathmandu. So far, the Government has shown no interest in addressing the demands put forward by the Sanghiya Gathbandhan.

After the 2006 people’s movement, Nepal saw landmark political change. The first Constituent Assembly elected by the Nepalese people in 2008 was charged with writing a new Constitution to institutionalize changes to end discrimination based on nationality, language, culture, religion, caste, and gender. In 2012, the first Constituent Assembly ended under mysterious circumstances and failed to draft a new Constitution. In 2013, Nepal elected a second Constituent Assembly, which returned to power officials who disregarded the changes brought about in Nepal in 2006. The World Newah Organization is deeply concerned that the new Constitution of Nepal continues to deny equal rights for indigenous nationalities, including Newars as well as Madhesi and Tharu people of Nepal.

Nepal is a multi-national, multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-religious country, and all people and groups of Nepal must be treated equally. As an international organization of Newars living around the globe, the World Newah Organization sincerely expresses its solidarity for the Sanghiya Gathbandhan and the ongoing quest for equality in Nepal. We fully support demands for equal rights, justice, and fairness for all citizens. We urge the Government of Nepal to rewrite and amend the Constitution to ensure that all people enjoy equal rights under the law and that the Constitution fairly represents all Nepalese citizens.
