WNO demands end of discrimination at KMC

world-newah-organizationKathmandu, July 24: World Newah Organization (WNO), on behalf of the Newah people & Organizations around the world has expressed serious concern over use of force during the peaceful demonstration for fair and inclusive employment of local job seekers in the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC).
“WNO strongly condemn such unwarranted intervention and use of brutal Police force by the Caretaker government and the “Nominated Chief” of KMC, and demand immediate release of anyone detained in this regard. The rules set are neither politically democratic nor socially just, and the use of police force should immediately be withdrawn,” stated a press release issued by WNO here, today.

In solidarity with the steps taken by Newah Swayetta Rajya Mankaa Sangharsha Samiti (NSRMSS) — Newar Autonomous State Joint Struggle Committee– on behalf of the indigenous Newah people of Nepal, WNO demands cancellation of previous examinations conducted in 2007 to select non-gazetted employees of KMC, which was non-transparent, partial, and made to select only certain segment of the applicant sympathetic to the ruling elite.
“This discriminatory practice is totally unacceptable to the law-abiding populace of Kathmandu valley. WNO firmly stands together with NSRMSS in their struggle for Civic and human rights, and social justice, WNO urge the government of Nepal and the “Nominated Chief” of the KMC Municipality to show sensibility in fulfilling the five-point demand put forward by the NSRSS and recommends to the Government of Nepal and the KMC to discard all discriminatory policies and practices of the government at both central and local levels.”

The organisaiton has also urged the government to stop deploying the Police force to conduct brutal repressive police action against their own people protesting peacefully to ensure the right of the indigenous people of the land.
WNO has further expressed deep concern over the fact that the local governance of the KMC is in the hands of a “Nominated Chief” who neither has any affiliation or allegiance to the local people and history, nor is he an indigenous inhabitant of the city. The election of the local Mayor is kept postponed by the central government depriving the people of Kathmandu of a locally elected government. “This is totally against the norm of democratic system that is ‘of the people’, ‘by the people’, and ‘for the people’.”

WNO demands that the “Nominated Chief” be recalled immediately and conduct local election of the Mayor of KMC as soon as possible so that the KMC would truly be a democratic local government according to the spirit of the constitution and it would not make such grave mistakes against local indigenous inhabitant of Kathmandu in future.
