Mayor of New York proclaims ‘World Newah Convention Day’ at the 4th WNO Convention

In appreciation of the contribution of the Newah people living in New York, the day of 6th August 2022 was proclaimed by the Office of the Mayor of the City of New York as the “World Newah Convention Day” in the City of New York. Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner on behalf of Mayor Eric Adams presented the proclamation to the 4th World Newah Convention Organizing Committee.

 

The 4th World Newah Convention was held ceremoniously at the LaGuardia Plaza Hotel, New York, the USA from the 5th to the 7th of August. The event organized jointly by Newa Guthi New York and World Newah Organization USA Chapter on behalf of the World Newah Organization (WNO) was a grand success with an attendance of more than 300 participants with the representation of more than 14 Newah organizations from various states of the US, UK and Germany. The Chief Guest of the event was popular artist Madan Krishna Shrestha who entertained the audience on the opening day. Popular Nepalese artists like Asishma Nakarmi and Nhuchhe Dangol also performed at the event which was also graced by Miss Nepal Priyanka Rani Joshi.

 

 

 

The three-days long event showcased the traditional and contemporary Newah culture through musical dance performances, and fashion shows. It further included an academic session with presentations on Newah culture, heritage, community, and politics, which welcomed Nepal-based culture experts like P. S. Joshi and politicians like Bijay Sainju, and discussed women’s issues and achievements through presentations by Bidya Manandhar (USA) and Rojina Pradhan Rai (UK). Convened by Samir Maharjan, Vice-President of WNO USA, the convention was chaired by outgoing President Season Shrestha from the USA. The convention concluded with the WNO New York Declaration which emphasized on important issues related to Newah culture, heritage, and community. The closing session included a General Assembly which unanimously elected the new executive committee of fourteen members with the leadership of Sanyukta Shrestha from the UK as the new President of WNO.
